Fairtrade International is a global non-profit organisation working to promote ethical trade and sustainable livelihoods for smallholder farmers and workers.
With a complex international structure and decentralised monitoring systems, Fairtrade faced challenges in aggregating impact data and aligning local Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning (MEL) practices with global standards.
To address these issues, Fairtrade partnered with TolaData to introduce a digital MEL platform and a Global Indicator Library designed to support consistent data collection, improve reporting efficiency, and align project-level indicators with global Key Performance Indicators (KPIs). This transition marked a significant shift to a centralised system for MEL.
TolaData’s user-friendly interface, multilingual training support, and co-development of the Global Indicator Library enabled Fairtrade teams across Africa, the Middle East, Asia, Pacific, Latin America and the Caribbean to adopt more standardised MEL practices without losing local flexibility.
The platform now supports major programmes such as the EU-funded Future is Fair and the multi-country DONUTS initiative, which together span over 50 countries and focus on sustainable, inclusive agriculture.
"Each year, as reports are prepared and data is updated, the work becomes progressively easier and more efficient"
